On 7 January 2013, the Union of the Comoros deposited with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO) its instrument of accession to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System).

On 7 January 2013, the Union of the Comoros deposited with the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO) its instrument of accession to the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System).

Considering that more than 98% of international merchandise trade is classified in terms of the Harmonized System, the WCO is pleased to welcome Comoros as the 146th Contracting Party to the Harmonized System Convention and looks forward to Comoros’ active participation in Harmonized System matters.

Comoros has been a Member of the WCO since 1 July 1993. This African island nation is located in the Indian Ocean, north-west of Madagascar. Its principal export commodities are vanilla, ylang-ylang (perfume essence), cloves, and copra. Comoros’ principal import commodities are rice and other foodstuffs, consumer goods, petroleum products, cement, and transport equipment.

The Harmonized System Convention will enter into force in Comoros on 1 January 2015, unless Comoros decides to specify an earlier date.
